What is B Corp certification?

A Certified B Corporation is a for-profit company that meets high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Think of it as the “conscious company” badge — for brands that care about purpose and profit.

How does it work?

To get certified, companies go through the B Impact Assessment, which evaluates how they treat their workers, their environmental footprint, community engagement, and governance structure. They need to score 80+ out of 200 to be certified, and must re-certify every 3 years.

Bonus: They must also legally commit to considering stakeholder interests, not just shareholders, by altering their corporate governance structure.

Is it “good”?

Generally, yes — but lately, it’s been under scrutiny. Some large corporations have met the minimum score while still engaging in practices that many don’t see as fully sustainable (Dr. Bronner’s, for example, dropped their certification in protest). So it’s a solid baseline, especially when incorporating so many aspects of sustainability into one tight certification — but not a flawless trust signal.

Look for it on:

  • Consumer brands like Patagonia, Allbirds, and Ben & Jerry’s
  • Financial firms, consultancies, media companies — even law firms
