FSC Mix / FSC Recycled
What is FSC Mix or FSC Recycled?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the leading global certification for responsibly managed forests — and when you see labels like FSC Mix or FSC Recycled, it’s all about the source of the wood or paper product.
What's the difference?
- FSC Mix means the product is made with a mix of FSC-certified wood, controlled wood (i.e. not from illegal or high-risk sources), and/or recycled materials.
- FSC Recycled means it’s made entirely from post-consumer or pre-consumer reclaimed materials — no virgin forest materials involved.
Both ensure the product is part of a supply chain that minimizes deforestation and supports ethical forest management.
Are they “good”?
Yes — especially FSC Recycled, which avoids cutting down trees entirely. FSC Mix is still strong but more variable, depending on how much certified vs. controlled wood is used. Either way, these labels are much better than uncertified wood or paper, which may be tied to illegal logging or poor labor practices.
Look for it on:
- Paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues
- Furniture and home goods
- Packaging, notebooks, and even clothing tags
