Grow Your Family Without Growing Your Carbon Footprint

In Finch 1.0’s early days, we did a lot of user testing around who would be most interested in sustainable products and it should come as no surprise that a huge portion of those people were new parents. For the first time in many of their lives, they became acutely aware of what they were putting in and on their babies.
I know many of my readers have been there before, but when you’re suddenly throwing 10+ diapers in the trash that you know will sit in the landfill for 500+ years, it’s hard to avoid the real impact this 10-pound thing is already having on the planet.
Every physical product comes with benefits and drawbacks, but here’s my roundup for some of my favorite products that are a little lighter on the planet:

DIAPERS
Coterie is my personal winner every time. The only drawback is the price, which sets you back $250/year versus Pampers. Necessary investment? I think so.

WIPES
Caboo Tree-Free Baby Wipes are made from OEKO-TEX® certified bamboo spunlace and are incredibly cost effective.

DIAPER CREAM
Triple Paste takes the cake, not only in function, but also because it comes in a plastic container (progress, not perfection) with a screwtop, meaning it’s more easily recyclable versus a tube.

BABY CARRIERS
We love SnuggleMe Organic - it operates similarly to the other leading brands, but is made with 92% organic cotton and 8% spandex. It fits babies from infancy to 18 months.

SWADDLES
Naturepedic are a member of 1% for the planet and make swaddles from 100% organic cotton. They’re also free from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-prohibited chemical treatments and dyes. I also love that their natural hues break from the overwhelmingly traditional pink or blue baby gear.

CRIB
The Nestig crib is handmade in a family-owned factory in Brazil and can evolve seamlessly from a crib to a toddler bed - a longer product lifespan is a pro in the land of sustainability.

CRIB MATTRESS
We’re suckers for Avocado everything. They’re on the pricier side, but if there’s anything worth investing in, it’s Avocado cribs & beds.

CRIB SHEETS
Keababies Soothe Fitted Crib Sheets use breathable, organic cotton but don’t break the bank.

BOTTLES
Philips Avent Natural Glass Baby Bottles are our pick. Glass bottles are a little more fragile, but it squashes the risk of any kind of plastic leaching into whatever your baby is consuming. These also sterilize super easily, and are recyclable in most areas.

DETERGENT
Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that using a gentle, fragrance-free detergent can help reduce the risk of skin irritation for babies with sensitive skin. So, it doesn’t necessarily have to be baby-specific detergent (and can be from our own list), but we love Seventh Generation, which is known for their hypoallergenic formula.

BABY SOAP
We absolutely love Burt’s Bees, which is hypoallergenic, truly tear-free, and really works without any of the bad stuff.

TOYS
Lovevery (pronounced: Love Every) not only maximizes more sustainable materials like wood and minimizes plastic, but their lost parts program also ensures you don’t need to buy an entire new kit if your dog eats it. They design their kits with reuse and repurpose in mind. As of this year, 90% of the materials used in their products are made from renewable, bio-based, or recycled materials.

MEDICINE
We are not doctors or medical experts, but do love Genexa’s line for its 0% artificial additives, as well as its long list of ingredients that will never find their way into the product line.

CARSEATS
Nuna is the only carseat company we’ve found that is flame-retardant free. Nuna also doesn’t use PFAS or any waterproofing materials on their car seats and follows the European REACH standard, which is a certification that reduces chemical inputs.

STROLLERS
Bumbleride strollers are made in Taiwan with sustainable manufacturing in mind. Their strollers are free of flame retardants, PVC, phthalates, PFAS, and polyurethane foam. Their fabrics are OEKO-TEX® certified and made from 100% recycled PET.
